In math this week we will begin learning about Geometry. We will be learning about 2 and 3 Dimensional Shapes. We will review addition and subtraction story problems using UPSC and also how to solvemissing addends in story problems
In reading last week, students began a three-week unit on analyzing story elements. Students will be expected to identify the characters, setting, problem, and solution of a story. We will also be practicing context clues in reading. Students will learn how to use the clues around a hard word to determine what that word means.
In writing this week your child will continue to write and understand what a small moment story is. Students have been learning to write about one moment in their lives (not a list of moments).
In social studies this week, we will focus on Jackie Robinson and Martin Luther King Jr. Our Famous Americans test will be Friday, October 14. Please see the parent letter that was sent home in binders at the beginning of the unit for information on each famous American.
Please remember to read each night with your child for twenty minutes and to play math games or visit the math websites listed on the Swans Creek Website. Record this time on the math or reading log. Please feel free to contact me with any question.
We made it through our first week of school and it was a success. This week your child will be learning more routines and expectations.
In math your child will learn how to complete a daily four question math assignment every morning in one of their journals. This will help your child learn second grade math concepts and review them throughout the year. We will also be playing math games this week that build your child’s understanding of combinations of 10. The games we will be playing are called “Tens Go Fish” and “Make 10.” In math we will also be practicing using a number line to add and subtract.
During our intervention/enrichment block this week, we will begin a short introductory unit called “Work Like a Scientist.” Students will learn how to be a scientist by observing using their five senses, using science tools, using inquiry skills, and being introduced to the scientific method.
Last week in reading, your child learned the expectations for reading to self. This week, we will focus on reading to someone. We will also have a lesson on picking good fit books. Please have a discussion with your child about picking a good fit book that is not too easy and not too hard. I have begun assessing your child to find out their instructional reading level. I will continue to do that this week.
In writing this week, students will learn how to pick a topic and then stretch the story out to three pages (beginning, middle, and end). We will also be talking about what your child should do if they feel they are done with a story they have been working on (add to the pictures, add to the words, or start a new story).
This week we will be starting a short unit on good citizenship. Students will be learning and hearing stories about honesty, trustworthiness, self-discipline, self-reliance, and respecting other people and their property. A parent letter will be sent home so that you can help your child review these important words and concepts.
Please remember to email me or contact the office if your child’s afternoon transportation changes. I will be assuming your child will be going home the same way every day unless you contact me or the office.
Please email me if you have any questions or concerns.
